The Top 10 Greatest Animated Moms

For every mom who held it together, and every kid still learning how.

My mom passed away in 2018. Mother's Day feels different now. I laugh about a lot of things, because that's how I handle hard days, and I know she'd want me to make something fun out of this one.

So here are the ten greatest moms in animation. Some are brave, some are silly, and all of them would have gotten along with mine.

10. Grandma Fa (Mulan)

Not technically a mom, but she earned a spot. She's bold, funny and completely sure that a lucky cricket will solve everything. Every family needs a grandma like this.

9. Linda (Rio)

A bird mom. She raised Blu from a chick and then crossed the world to find him when he went missing. I can't keep a houseplant alive.

8. Queen Arianna (Tangled)

REAL: in Tangled, the king and queen release lanterns every year on Rapunzel's birthday, hoping their lost daughter will see them. Eighteen years of hope. That's a mom.

7. Chicha (The Emperor's New Groove)

Expecting a baby, raising two wild kids, and still the smartest person in the room, including the emperor. She out-thinks Yzma without breaking a sweat.

6. Mrs. Davis (Toy Story)

She let Andy be Andy. Big imagination, loud games, toys everywhere. Every mom who let their kid be a little weird deserves a trophy.

5. Eudora (The Princess and the Frog)

A seamstress who taught Tiana to dream big and work hard, and to never forget what really matters: the people you love.

4. Queen Elinor (Brave)

She literally turns into a bear, and she still finds a way to understand her daughter. The lesson: moms and kids both have to listen.

3. Elastigirl (The Incredibles)

She holds the family together while saving the world. REAL: in Incredibles 2, she's the one who goes back to hero work while Bob learns how hard it is to run a house.

2. Mrs. Brisby (The Secret of NIMH)

REAL: a widowed mouse who must move her family before the farmer plows their field, while her son is too sick to travel. She's small and scared, and she does it anyway. That's courage.

1. Mrs. Jumbo (Dumbo)

The original. When she's locked away, she still reaches through the bars to rock her baby to sleep while "Baby Mine" plays. If that scene doesn't get you, nothing will.

Honorable mentions

  • Duchess (The Aristocats). A single mom raising three kittens with style.

  • Nicole Watterson (The Amazing World of Gumball). Fierce, fast and not to be messed with.

  • Bluey's mom, Chilli (Bluey). Patient, playful and always up for one more game.

Final thoughts

My mom was a saint. She'd be glad I'm making something that brings people together. If you still have your mom, call her today. If you don't, tell someone a story about her.
