A to Z of Animation Studios: Z Is for Zagtoon
The studio that turned a ladybug into a worldwide superhero.
Z is for Zagtoon
The founder: Jeremy Zag, a French producer, started the company in the late 2000s. In about ten years it went from a small studio to a global brand.
The big idea: Make a superhero who feels new, set her in Paris, and design the show for kids in every country at once.
The Miraculous phenomenon
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (2015 onward). Two Paris teens, Marinette and Adrien, secretly become the superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir. They don't know each other's identities, even though they sit in the same classroom. The villain, Hawk Moth, turns upset people into villains, and the heroes have to help them feel better to win.
Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie (2023). A musical origin story on the big screen.
Ghostforce (2021). Three kids secretly protect their city from mischievous ghosts.
Power Players (2019). A boy who can shrink to toy size leads a team of action figures.
Why Zagtoon is so successful
Global from day one. Made with partners in France, Korea, Japan and elsewhere, and sold everywhere.
A hero built on kindness. Ladybug beats villains by fixing what upset them.
A universe, not a show. Toys, specials, movies and spin-offs, all planned together.
Honorable mention: Zumbastico Studios
A studio from Chile with a bold, crafty style.
Zumbástico Fantástico (2011). A wild mix of puppets and animation.
Puerto Papel / Paper Port (2015). A stop-motion-style show about a girl in a small seaside town where everything looks like it's made of paper.
Zumbastico helped prove that Latin American studios belong on the world stage.
The lesson
Zagtoon built something brand new by thinking about the whole world, not just one country. Big dreams need big planning.
That's a wrap on A to Z
Twenty-six letters, dozens of studios, a century of animation. If you want to keep the fun going, tell us which studio you'd pick for each letter. Animation never stops changing, so who knows? Maybe there's a second alphabet coming.
