A to Z of Animation Studios: I Is for Illumination

The studio that turned little yellow henchmen into a global empire.

I is for Illumination

Founded: 2007, by producer Chris Meledandri, who had previously run 20th Century Fox Animation, where he oversaw Ice Age. Illumination partnered with Universal Pictures, and most of its films are animated in Paris at Illumination Studios Paris (originally Mac Guff).

The approach: Bright, fast, funny family movies made for much smaller budgets than most big animation studios spend. Illumination is known for keeping costs low and audiences big.

Greatest hits

  • Despicable Me (2010). A supervillain adopts three girls as part of a heist and becomes a dad. The heart of the movie is Gru and the girls.

  • The Minions. Gru's babbling yellow helpers stole the franchise. REAL: Minions (2015) earned more than $1 billion worldwide.

  • The Secret Life of Pets (2016). What your pets do when you leave.

  • Sing (2016). An animal talent show full of pop songs.

  • The Grinch (2018). A gentle, colorful take on the Dr. Seuss classic.

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023). REAL: one of the highest-grossing animated films ever, earning more than $1.3 billion worldwide.

The Illumination formula

  1. Comedy first. Slapstick and sight gags that work in any language.

  2. A breakout sidekick. The Minions are the most famous example in modern animation.

  3. Music everywhere. Familiar songs and big musical moments.

  4. Efficient production. Smaller budgets and fast schedules.

The struggle

Critics often say Illumination movies are fun but not as deep or daring as the best from Pixar or Disney. Illumination's answer has mostly been box office numbers.

Honorable mention: Imagi Animation Studios

A Hong Kong studio that made the CGI TMNT (2007) and Astro Boy (2009). REAL: it closed in 2010, but it was an early example of big-studio-quality CGI coming from outside Hollywood.

The lesson

Illumination proves that knowing your audience and your budget is a strategy, not a compromise. They decided exactly what kind of movie they make, and they make it very well.
